#1 Concrete Company in Florence, South Carolina

Concrete around Florence lives a hard life. It sits on sandy loam that drains fast and turns to sticky clay a foot or two down, it bakes through summer afternoons in the 90s, and it gets pushed from below by the roots of the pines and oaks that shade so many of the older lots in town. Florence Concrete Pros pours driveways, patios, slabs, steps and walks with those conditions in mind, and we fix the concrete that was poured without them.

Tell us what you need poured or fixed and about how big; we measure on site and put the price in writing.

Most people who reach us are looking at something specific: a driveway panel that has dropped an inch at the apron, a back porch slab that holds water against the house, a shop pad for a new metal building, or a walk that an oak root has tipped up into a trip hazard. Tell us what you are looking at and about how big it is, and we come out, measure it and look at what is underneath before we talk about what it should cost.

What we pour and fix

New driveways and replacements are the bulk of our residential work. Plenty of homes near downtown still have the narrow single-car strip they were built with, and plenty of newer subdivisions have driveways that settled because the base under them was never compacted properly. Most of our calls start with a tired driveway that needs replacing, and we handle widening, aprons and the tie-in to the street as part of the same job.

Patios come next: plain broom-finish slabs off the back door, stamped patterns with release color, and exposed aggregate for people who want grip and texture around a pool or grill. We also pour slabs for sheds, shops, garages and additions, including the footings and monolithic foundations that go under them, and we do garage floors in new and existing buildings.

Repair work covers cracked and sunken panels, root-lifted sidewalks, crumbling front steps and old concrete that needs to be broken out and hauled away. On the commercial side we pour dumpster pads, parking areas, loading aprons, curbs and sidewalks for businesses and churches around the Pee Dee.

Why concrete cracks around here

Frost is rarely the culprit in this part of South Carolina. What we see instead is concrete that was asked to sit on a base that moved. Pee Dee soil is mostly sandy loam over a clay subsoil. The sand drains well on top, but when a heavy rain finds a gap at the edge of a slab it carries fine material away with it, and the clay below holds water instead of letting it through. Over a few seasons that hollows out a void, and a panel drops or snaps across the middle.

Trees do the rest. Loblolly pines and live oaks send shallow roots out a long way, and a root that grows under a sidewalk lifts it a little more every year until the joint becomes a ledge. Pine sap and needles also stain bare concrete, which is why we bring up sealing on patios and driveways that sit under the canopy.

So the work that matters most happens before the truck shows up: cutting out soft or organic soil, bringing in and compacting a proper base, setting slope so water leaves the slab, and putting joints where the concrete will want to crack anyway.

Where we pour

Our home base is Florence, and a big share of our work is inside the city, from the brick ranch streets around Timrod Park out to the subdivisions toward I-95. We pour across Florence County and the nearby Pee Dee towns, from Darlington and Hartsville to Lake City and Marion. Timmonsville, Quinby, Effingham, Lamar, Pamplico, Coward and Scranton are all inside our range, close enough that the crew can be on site early on the morning of a pour.

How a pour runs

  1. It starts with the form on this page. Type in what you need poured or fixed, roughly how big it is, and anything you have noticed, like a panel that rocks when you drive over it or water that stands by the garage door. We call you back, set a time to look, and walk the job with a tape measure and a probe rod to see what the base is doing.
  2. From there you get a written quote. Every job is priced after we have measured it on site and looked at the base, with the price in writing before any forms go down. Once you say yes, we request utility locates, pull any permit the job needs and put the pour on the calendar.
  3. Pour day in summer usually starts at first light. Afternoon heat and pop-up thunderstorms are both hard on fresh concrete, so we aim to have it placed and finished before the worst of the day, then put down a curing compound and keep an eye on the radar. You get a short list of what to stay off and for how long, and we come back to cut joints or pull forms when the slab is ready.

Tell us what you need poured

The quickest way to a price is the quote form. Give us your name, a phone number, the address if you want us to find the job without a back-and-forth, and a few lines about the work: a new driveway about two cars wide, a patio off the back door, a cracked walk that needs to come out. We read every one and call back to set up a time to measure.
